This spring I directed Daniel Buckroyd’s adaptation of Michael Morpugo’s sequel to War Horse for schools in the east of England, Polka Theatre, London and at The Mercury theatre, Colchester. There were many things about this project which are exciting not least the opportunity to work with a composer/performer to create a musical soundscape to underscore this production that will be played live through all the performances.
As of May this show inout on the road to schools in Essex before a run at Polka Theatre 31st May to 4th June.
The Haunted Man
This is a piece designed for touring in Autumn 2017 and produced by my own company, Kindred Theatre.
Building on from the R&D we did last year, this adaptation of the Dickens ghost story is set between two different times, 2017 and 1850 and centres around Jonathan, an elderly man with dementia who is visited by a phantom on Christmas Eve. Jonathan is helped by his young care worker, Asha, by using objects and stories to help him find reconciliation.
Asha’s methods are similar to Life Story, a practice of helping those with dementia talk about their lives, which has led us to organise intergenerational storytelling workshops to generate an audio exhibition to tour with the play called What’s Your Story?
Due to competition for funds we did not receive ACE funding. We are re-visiting the project to see what our next step will be to bring this show to rural audiences.
You can read more about the production on Kindred’s website.
